Public Presentations:
Why America Fights
This talk explores how the U.S. government has presented war aims to the American people from the Philippines War to Operation Iraqi Freedom. To rally support, official propaganda assured Americans that they fought to spread freedom and democracy by defending civilization from barbarism. We’ll examine the persuasive messages that have inspired, informed, and deceived in time of crisis and consider what they reveal about the way Americans see themselves and their role in the world.
Selling War at the Movies
Movies and war have been partners since the Spanish-American War when enterprising filmmakers floated toy boats in an overturned table to recreate Admiral Dewey’s defeat of the Spanish fleet in Manila in 1898. This talk explores how the U.S. government used films to arouse patriotism during World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. It will consider how the motion picture industry has and has not cooperated with official efforts to sell war. |
