Public Presentations:
Un)Womanly Taboo Violations: Gertrude and her Successors
In Act III of Hamlet, Hamlet tells his mother “for at your age,/The heyday in the blood is tame, it’s humble,/And waits upon the judgment.” Beginning with Gertrude in Hamlet, this presentation offers an analysis of outrage (in the form of adult sons and daughters) that targets sexuality in older women. The presentation examines resistance and rebellion in Gertrude, Hazel Peoples in Toni Cade Bambara’s contemporary short story, “My Man, Bovanne” and in Monica Szabo in Mary Gordon’s recent novel, Spending.
Public Presentation: Topsy-Turvy: Stages and Ages
This presentation traces life’s vicissitudes: the ups, downs, quests for meaning, and the laughter—through childhood, young adulthood, and adulthood. The discussion will plumb a variety of genres: film, (including Heartburn and When Harry Met Sally) memoir, and short fiction.
Other Public Program Ideas: Paula Friedman is available to lead book discussions. Contact her directly to make arrangements.
