MICHAEL PATRICK GILLESPIE
Michael Patrick Gillespie is the Louise Edna Goeden Professor of English at Marquette University where he has taught since 1980. His areas of interest include Irish Literature and Film. He has published book-length studies on the works of Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and William Kennedy. His new book is The Myth of an Irish Cinema.
Public Presentations:
An Overview of Irish Film
Using clips of films relating to modern Irish film, Michael Patrick Gillespie will explore the diverse features of motion pictures made in the country over the last fifty years. The emphasis of the talk will be on the compartmentalizing of Irish film, using John Ford's The Quiet Man as a prototype, and then exploring how subsequent directors have modified his approach.
Film across the Genres
Michael Patrick Gillespie will present a series of talks, each illustrated with film clips, to explore and compare the many genres of Classic Hollywood Cinema, including Westerns, Gangster Films, Film Noir, Science Fiction, Horror, Slapstick Comedy, Screwball Comedy. In each case the talk will focus on what we have come to recognize as the fundamental features of each genre, and then discuss the variations on each, particularly in terms of their reflections of an evolving cultural context.
