Public Presentations:
American Women in the Wartime South Pacific: Stories of Resistance and Survival
These are the stories of ordinary American women who were caught up in the Japanese expansion in the Pacific during World War II. Find out how they coped with nearly three years of internment by the enemy, how they dealt with the uncertainty of rescue and a life-threatening dwindling supply of food and medicine. Also, find out how a few of these women chose to evade internment to undertake the risky business of assisting the guerrilla movement.
Sentimental Imperialist: A Wisconsin Woman in the Colonial Philippines
Ethel Thomas Herold, born and raised in Potosi, Wisconsin and educated at Lawrence University, traveled with her husband Elmer to the Philippine Islands in 1922 to work as teachers to help “Americanize” the islands. This presentation explores Ethel’s reasons for doing so, showing how she was motivated by her understanding of what it meant to be a patriotic American citizen.
Dale Evans: Her Life and Times
Dale Evans is perhaps most well-known for her cowgirl roles in movies and on television opposite Roy Rogers. But in addition to her acting career, Dale was a talented singer and a prolific author. Her considerable celebrity was motivated by her strong Christian faith. This presentation, complete with visuals and music, provides an overview of Dale’s career and how it was influenced by religion and by her beliefs about women’s proper roles in society.
