Feed Sacks…Yesterday’s Cherished Fabrics
Oh, those fabulous calico printed feed sacks from the 30s, 40s and 50s. All were a bonus that came with buying essentials for the home or farm, something soft and pretty in times of hardship and rationing. The nostalgia for feed sacks brings back happy memories of grandmother’s aprons, tea towels, little girls’ dresses and other uses far beyond today’s imagination. Feed sacks are a part of America’s rural history and are now a hot collectable. Darlene Kronschnabel will share interesting stories she collected while researching feed sack history, such as how their sales predicted the outcome of the Dewey/Truman race for the White House. Her presentation display includes assorted feed sacks, garments, linen and quilts, and swatch books with over one thousand 3-inch samples. The humble, but colorful, feed sack still has a story to tell today.
Seasons in a Country Kitchen: A Journey Down Memory Lane, Country-style
Travel back in time to the warmth of a long ago rural kitchen filled with the aroma of home cooked meals and stories that evoke the rich texture of country living. Through colorful anecdotes about farm life, Darlene Kronschnabel will present a bountiful harvest of traditional cuisine and share feasts and celebrations that enlivened the country year. Month by month, starting with blustery March, traditional moving day on the farm, and ending with the next February, the lifestyle of the past centered in the warmth of the country kitchen. She will read from portions of Seasons In A Country Kitchen, (her latest book) showing how farm families, both outside and in the kitchen, managed the long hours filled with hard work. Still there was always the humorous side of life in the country kitchen, like the tears when grating horseradish, curing sauerkraut, feeding harvest crews, and putting up with drop-in company. The presentation shares the toils and pleasures of the old time country kitchen, passing them down as a delightful legacy from our past and offering a tribute to the country women who kept their families warm and dry.
