Life in the Brazilian Favelas
With almost a decade of experience researching the
favelas (shantytowns) of Rio de Janeiro, Kennedy will present a personal narrative of the people he has met, the lives he has encountered, and what he has learned by living in Rio's hillside communities, to give a comprehensive examination of life in the
favela. Many aspects of favela life will be explored, including: housing, work, religion, political power, social controls, social ethics, drugs and drug lords, music, samba schools, funk, literature, charitable and non-governmental organizations (both religious and non-religious) that work in the
favelas, education, daycare, street children, and class relations.
