The Milchig State: 200 Years of Jewish Life in Wisconsin
Jews have lived in more than 200 Wisconsin communities since 1793, holding essential jobs, contributing to civic and economic growth, and organizing dozens of synagogues. This slide presentation explains why two large waves of Jewish immigrants came to Wisconsin, why they chose their new hometowns, how they supported themselves, how they practiced their Judaism, why many Jewish communities declined, and why others persevere. The presentation also highlights Wisconsin's most influential Jews, including illusionist Harry Houdini (Appleton), State Treasurer Sol Levitan (New Glarus and Madison), Israeli Premier Golda Meir (Milwaukee), and senators Herbert Kohl (Milwaukee) and Russell Feingold (Janesville and Madison).
