James Duane Doty
James Duane Doty began his Wisconsin career as the circuit judge presiding over Michigan's vast Western Territory. He was "The Law" west of Lake Michigan. As a politician, Indian agent, land speculator, and statesman, Doty became embroiled in Wisconsin's drive towards independence, first as a territory and later as a state. He founded the towns of Fond du Lac and Neenah, laid out the route for the Military Road, and, through some suspicious backroom negotiations, established Madison as the first state capital. Doty's wheeling and dealing earned him the enmity of some of his great contemporaries: Moses Strong, Byron Kilbourne, Morgan L. Martin, and, naturally, Henry Dodge. Doty's struggle to hold onto wealth and power, while fulfilling his political and humanitarian aspirations, makes for a wonderful story. Powers presents a lively, humorous, and informative portrayal of this fascinating historical figure.
