GERI WEINSTEIN-BREUNIG
Geri Weinstein-Breunig has a Master of Science in Cultural Geography from the University of Wisconsin. Combining formal training and practical experience, she works with citizens to define a river or stream in their community as a cultural landscape steeped in shared history and value. Weinstein-Breunig has 18 years experience in management of public land and water. She has held the position of Director of Horticulture and Forestry for Central Park, New York City, and Director of Landscape Policy for the Chicago Park District. Her written cultural histories of Midwestern rivers have been a catalyst for citizen stewardship initiatives.

A Geographer Looks at Nature Nearby

Is there nature at our doorstep? It is neither prairie nor old growth, but it is history and culture. Inside our everyday life, rather than separate from our daily surroundings, nature nearby tells us how our community, town, or city grew to be what it is. It can hold our idea of the kind of person we want to be, the meaning of friends and family, and the kind of society we want to live in. Weinstein-Breunig looks at nature near the front door throughout Wisconsin, not as a biologist, but as a cultural geographer in search of the meaning we find in nature nearby and the different cultural ways in which it is expressed.
