Public Presentations:
The Soldiers of Poverty: A Tribute To The Men Of The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
This talk provides an overview of the Great Depression, the natural resources and economic need for Roosevelt's Emergency Conservation Work Act, the living conditions and work performed by the CCC volunteers, and the rustic architecture in our parks that were developed during the CCC era. It includes a one-hour Powerpoint presentation suitable for youth and adult audiences.
Who Is Going With Me To Camp Copper Falls
Mary Schueller has written and presents an interactive script portraying the conversation between the Conservation Corps Commanding Officer of Company 692 and his men as they are being transferred from Giant City Park in Makanda, Illinois to Copper Falls State Park in Mellen, Wisconsin. The performance lasts about forty-five minutes and is appropriate for all age groups. Schueller can make the playbill available to interested theatre groups wanting to perform the piece.
The State Park Movement Of Wisconsin
A Powerpoint presentation brings to life the story of how our state park land was acquired during the national conservation movement in the mid to late-1800s. Images illustrate the rustic architecture in the Wisconsin parks developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The program lasts about an hour. This presentation can be adapted to a shorter version for young children and elementary school groups, called Where do State Parks Come From?. Children will learn the basic concepts of rustic architecture and will be encouraged to draw park buildings using these ideas.
The Life and Contributions Of Logan Archibold Vilas
Mary Scheuller presents an hour-long Powerpoint presentation showing the historic life achievements of a pioneer aviator who was the first to fly 53-miles over the open water of Lake Michigan with no compass and no flight instruments. The presentation is rich with fascinating detail, including the story of Vilas' 1915 flight from conservation headquarters in Trout Lake, Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, making him the first in the world to use airplanes in forest fire detection. This presentation is suitable for all ages.
The Water Flyer: A Tribute To Jack Vilas, Pioneer Aviator
This is Mary Schueller’s one-person, one-act play about this important Wisconsin aviator. Jack Vilas comes alive on stage, introducing himself and recounting his experiences in his historic flying machine. The performance includes music and is fun for all ages. Theatre groups interested in using the playbill are also encouraged to contact Scheuller directly. |
