Public Presentations:
The Works and Life of August Derleth
August Derleth is Wisconsin's most prolific writer with over 150 books to his credit. Describing his life in his home town and the surrounding countryside, he wrote, "I found I must choose, between going out into the wider world, or traveling widely in the microcosm of Sac Prairie." His nature writing remains timely; much of his Sac Prairie "Microcosmos," as well as other areas of the Wisconsin countryside central to his writing, are rapidly changing and, in some cases, disappearing. David Schweitzer uses his own theater background to keep cherished bits and pieces of it alive for audiences in this presentation.
August Derleth Reflects on Two Kindred Spirits and Their Shared Passions
August Derleth frequently gave lectures, and wrote volumes about other authors who influenced his life, his work, and who shared his passions. The biggest influence on his life was undoubtedly Henry David Thoreau, about whom Derleth wrote a biography and three other published works, including a record of three pilgrimages he made to Thoreau's Walden Pond. Derleth also wrote a biography of the pioneer feminist, award-winning playwright, novelist, and journalist Zona Gale. As August Derleth, David Schweitzer shares with the audience Derleth's passions for these authors who touched his life so deeply.
