CAROLYN WEDINCarolyn Wedin is back home in the woods of northwest Wisconsin after 35 years of teaching literature and writing at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and in Kansas, North Carolina, Sweden, Norway, Poland, and England. Her community education literature classes in Frederic have attracted participants from many surrounding towns, perhaps because the group does such things as creating a "Babette's Feast" when reading Isak Dinesen, partaking in a Renaissance banquet to accompany Shakespeare, and visiting a famous soul food restaurant in Minneapolis when studying black literature.Public Presentations:One Hundred Years of Hard-Fought Success: Stories behind the inter-racial founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, on Abraham Lincoln’s 100th Birthday, 12 February 1909. In 1997 Carolyn Wedin published a biography, Inheritors of the Spirit: Mary White Ovington and the Founding of the NAACP. With this book as a basis, she will depict and discuss the difficulties of the early days of this organization, in the context of thorough-going segregation, extreme inequalities in education, and violence against black people. The story of this long-lived civil rights creation is inspiring still, when we, too, need to inherit the spirit of the early abolitionists to deal with our own 21st century racial questions. Other Public Program Ideas: Carolyn Wedin is available to facilitate book discussions and participate in humanities programs. Contact her directly to discuss ideas. |
