Art Start Portrait Project-Opening Exhibition and Events-Portaits, Oral Histories, Online Public Archive
The Art Start Portrait Project offers Black and Latino young men the opportunity to explore and portray the complex narratives about their lives, asking the world to see them for how they choose to be seen. The project will help about 30 Milwaukee teens create visions of their future and show the world how they want to be seen. Participants explore personal identity and envision their lives without boundaries. With support from photographers, retouchers and stylists, and oral historians, those visions come to life through multimedia exhibitions. The exhibition of these pieces throughout Milwaukee galleries and public spaces offer communities the urgent challenge to see beyond statistics and circumstances to the essence of complex, self-determined young men in pursuit of self-discovery.
