"Folk Songs of Another America", Traditional Music of the Upper Midwest-Concert, followed by Polka Dance

Put on your dancing shoes! "Folksongs of Another America: The Enduringly Diverse Upper Midwest" will be a day looking at, discussing, participating in, and celebrating the music of our region, and the publications which have highlighted that music. Those publications include the Grammy nominated, multi-media "Folk Songs of Another America: Field Recordings from the upper Midwest 1937-1946," by Jim Leary; Richard March's "Polka Heartland: Why the Midwest Loves to Polka," and the re-issed "Ballads and Songs of the Shanty Boy" newly edited and renamed "The Pinery Boys." Afternoon events, free to the public include a lecture/conversation with Jim Leary, along with a film showing; lecture/conversation on polka between Rick March and second-generation polka performers, Michelle and Dan Jerabek, and workshop/conversation with Gretchen Dykstra and Brian Miller. Evening activities will begin with a one-hour concert, followed by a polka dance, music provided by the band Copper Box.
