"Taking Back Neighborhoods:" Conversations around Place in Milwaukee-Community Review Open to the public

Mainstream accounts of Milwaukee's Northside neighborhoods have always focused on crime, poverty and blight -- persistently paining residents as hapless victims of environmental dereliction. However, neighborhood residents bitterly challenge one-sided media accounts. They claim stewardship practices are ingrained in their culture and behavior as they "take back homes, streets and gardens." The objective of this project is to collect and disseminate local stories of caring and stewardship to identify and popularize best practices, encourage dialog around democratic transformative change in urban neighborhoods, render visible positive histories of inner city residents otherwise obscure in mainstream discourses, and use grassroots knowledge to produce tangible actions.
