Gete Anishinaabe Izichigewin - Ancient Ojibwe Lifeways-Summer School/Field School w/Bayfield Public School

This project involves bringing ancient Anishinaabe culture to life in a collaborative learning and teaching environment with a community oriented series of archaeological and cultural programs for Red Cliff community members, K-12 students, tribal staff, and field school students on the Red Cliff Reservation in Wisconsin. The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is sponsoring this five-week collaborative project to connect community members to their history through a hands-on learning experience of participating in an archaeological dig led by professional archaeologists. Community members will participate in the making of ancient stone tools, traditional fire-making and cooking technologies, while sharing the Anishinaabe language. Community members and the THPO office staff will in turn teach the professional archaeologists and the archaeology students. They will learn about the culture of present day Anishinaabe, what modern reservation life is like, and excavate in a culturally respectful way.
